      <image:title>Projects - The Product</image:title>
<image:caption>The Antibody Registry is a database containing information about antibodies — markers relating to illness and other biological processes in living creatures — for use in biomedical research. It provides a service for researchers to properly cite the antibodies they have used or created when they publish their research papers to journals. ABR is an effort by FDI Lab and SciCrunch, whose project goals are to standardize citations in scientific publications to improve reproducibility and consistency in the biomedical field. One crucial aspect of the service is its crowd-sourced data, which must come from researchers submitting information about the antibodies they’ve used. I redesigned the workflow to include new functions such as checking for duplicates, previewing commercial antibody sites, and web-scraping relevant information to automatically populate the submission’s input fields. Oops! This case study isn’t finished yet. Please check back soon for more!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - The Research</image:title>
<image:caption>Our first steps were to visit homeless shelters and adult day centers in San Diego. Initially, we dedicated our resources to need-finding and gathering information about the broader housing-insecure population. Our questions aimed to be as neutral and open-ended as possible. Throughout each interview across several centers, we stayed mindful about our conduct and respectfulness toward a community with challenges that we hadn’t experienced ourselves. One of our primary goals for this project was responsibility — that we would be mindful of our roles as researchers and outsiders so as not to exploit the difficulties of homeless individuals for the sake of creating a prototype. We didn’t want to let our involvement — such as our observations or testing — impede the functions and services of the day centers we visited.</image:caption>

<image:caption>(I was overjoyed!! This was by and large the best part of my high school experience.) As editor-in-chief, I curated the articles, photographs, and design of each page of the newspaper. I had an incredible team for my year as editor — we had tremendous talent in our writers and creative genius among our photographers. Each issue felt like our best yet, and I owe my success to a team of students who supported me and communicated to me how to best support them.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - The Goals</image:title>
<image:caption>The FAIR Data Informatics Lab’s rebranding was primarily motivated by a need to unify several projects headed by the lab’s multiple Principal Investigators. These projects ranged from databases to research studies, each involving biomedical disciplines such as neuroscience and digestive disease. With this unification, the laboratory was given its name — shortened to FDI Lab — and needed a website. Being that none of the lab members had experience designing websites, my role was switched from Data Curator to Designer. The identity of the website needed to be professional and clean with a distinct and sleek aesthetic. I used a deep blue and golden yellow — plucked directly from the UC San Diego logo. This choice solidified its association with the university, as well as created a straightforward color palate that adds personality without infringing on the photos or logos on the site.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - The Giving Tree</image:title>
<image:caption>The Giving Tree was a peer-to-peer volunteer platform to help people in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the wide-spread quarantine and high risk of infection, many people suddenly found it difficult to access essential items like groceries and toiletries. This problem was compounded for people who were immunocompromised or elderly, as their risk of virus-related complications was much higher. The Giving Tree’s primary goal was to create a platform for these people in need to connect with lower-risk individuals who are able to purchase and deliver goods for their community. On both sides of the pandemic, we found people who needed help and people who wanted to help. The Giving Tree set out to be the bridge that helps these two groups unite — albeit while complying with 6-feet social distancing regulations. My Role I joined the team as a UX writer and copywriter, but I wore many hats during the startup’s three month run. I wrote copy and blog posts for marketing efforts, conducted user interviews to help our user research team, and contributed to product development and content strategy meetings.</image:caption>
